Margaritis Katsanidis A – The quest of drifting an Alfa Romeo 75 V6 to the top

Today’s special feature is the story of a professional race car driver who has a dream to compete with the best in the world. Doing everything possible to make it happen with sheer determination and hard work. We had the opportunity to interview Margaritis Katsanidis, a passionate and aggressive professional race car driver from Greece. Margaritis aims to compete in Formula Drift.

Hello & thank you for joining us today, Margaritis. Tell us about your story.

My name is Margaritis Katsanidis, I was born in Greece on January 30, 1983 and I am a professional drift race car driver.

You’re doing quite well in the ProAm Scene, take us back to where it all began.

My interest in motors and races started at a very young age. First motocross, then dragster races and stepped into drift racing in 2007. If I have to present myself, I can say that I am very persistent and committed to my aims. I know that the competition in this sport is tough and if you want to succeed, you must be ready to work hard without compromises. I have a lot of self confidence, and I believe that hard work always pays off. I also believe that a strong and creative personality is an important asset for every race driver.

And what made you build an Alfa Romeo Drift car? It is quite rare, so to speak.

In this spirit (answered in the previous question), I made Alfa Romeo my car of choice in 2002, both as everyday driver and as a race car. As you can understand, I have a genuine passion, both for racing and Italian cars. That of course does not mean that I didn’t have any chance to drive other very good cars as well, but I cannot hide my preference for Italian ones! The car I am currently racing with is an Alfa Romeo 75, 3.0 liter V6 biturbo 24Valve engine with 550hp at 1.5 bar. I am always trying to improve it.s performance and In this context, I have already changed some engines and all of them were from Alfa Romeo.

I started with a 1.8 liter 4 Valve Turbo with 380hp, then a 3.5 liter V6 and later a 3.0 liter compressor which finally, with the addition of the two turbos is the car I am currently driving!

What is your favorite thing about your car?

What I like the most about this car is the fact that it’s unique in its kind . Actually, I have not seen anyone compete with such a car and that will probably never happen. This is what makes this car really unique regardless of its performance. I still remember the day I managed to win my first race with it! It felt really great to stand on the podium with an Italian car! That first victory gave me the energy to continue and the will to improve my car as well as my skills.

Would you like to tell us about the team helping you?

It goes without saying, behind any successful driver there is his team, and I have to say my team in Greece followed me everywhere and offered me unconditional support. Together we have achieved many important victories, including a win at King of Europe Drift Series in Greece in 2011!.

Unfortunately, no one from my Greek team managed to follow me to US. Nevertheless, I was lucky enough to meet one of the top Greek mechanics of the 80s here in Los Angeles who is an expert in Alfa Romeos. His name is John Kapodistrias and has been living in Los Angeles for the last 30 years. John owns a body and mechanic business, which is the “Santa Monica Auto Center“. John has helped me a lot and he was the first official member of Margaritis Racing in America!

My wife and my newborn daughter are always close to me and always offering their unconditional support in good as well as bad times!

Your dream is to compete in Formula Drift, how is that coming along?

I have to admit that since I have arrived in the US, I was really lucky to meet with many exceptional people who have helped me in so many ways to take another step toward my target and my dream. My dream is to start a career as a professional driver in Formula Drift.

My first priority is to demonstrate my driving skills, and to get noticed by Alfa Romeo. As you know, Alfa Romeo is owned by Fiat and always looking for opportunities to enter the American market, in the very competitive segment of sports cars. I hope that they will appreciate my skills and especially because I am already driving an Alfa Romeo , before some other company or sponsor steps in.

Until then, I’ll keep practicing. My plan to participate in every race of the ProAm Formula Drift championship with my complete focus on the target that I have set. So my friends, stay tuned because the best is yet to come!!!
